From April 14 – June 3, outdoor-lovers will be able to participate in this exciting promotion. More than 75 “caches” will be hidden throughout the Chippewa Valley. On April 14th a CITO (Cache In, Trash Out) event will be held to kick-off the promotion. This event will give participants the opportunity to participate in a hobby that they love, while helping to clean up a park in our community. In conjunction with the April 14 CITO event, Geocaching 101 classes will be offered to those who want to come out and learn the basics. A closing event is also planned for June 3 with activities such as a night cache and an expo featuring outdoors and recreation exhibitors.
For those new to the sport, Geocaching involves the use of a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit. A large-scale scavenger hunt of sorts, geocachers find “cache” coordinates online and enter them into a GPS unit. Then the hunt begins. Once found, a cache may provide the geocacher with a wide variety of rewards. The geocacher is only asked to leave something behind for the next hunter and to sign the log book which is contained in each “cache”. Not only is geocaching a growing sport, but it has become a great way for communities to promote tourism and expose visitors to the beauty of the area.
Anyone interested in trying geocaching for the first time is also invited to stop out at the Eau Claire Area Visitor Center, where you can borrow a pre-programmed GPS unit for the day.
