What spelunkers believe will be the largest cave system in Wisconsin is now being excavated in Cherney Maribel Caves County Park in Manitowoc County.
The New Hope Cave, discovered in 1984, is part of an extensive system throughout the park. Once just a crawl space, the cave can now accommodate 250 standing adults in what's dubbed the "Halloween Room". When fully developed, it's thought the cave will extend some 700 feet.
Plans call for public tours of the cave system and a learning center to describe the glacial activity that created it. |
